What is The Mask Of Movement?
Mask play provides a platform for exploring certain movement fundamentals and the essentials for depicting the imaginative world of the stage. However, this play we have found also helps in daily living. In this workshop we use these movements combined with the Alexander Technique to really “come to grips” with the way that habits interfere with movement and expression.
Alexander Technique is fundamentally the study of habit, choice, and change. As the work on the neutral mask helps us begin to identify habits and patterns, it allows us to create alternatives in our bodies and minds, helping us rediscover ease, capacity, and versatility. By creating more choice and capacity, the Alexander work supports our range, skill, and artistry as performers.
Combining the two practices empowers the actor to:
- Recognize physical imbalance and interference patterns
- Access new choices that support their body and their craft
- Discover ease, versatility, and capacity
When paired with the Alexander Technique, this investigation into mask work becomes a somatic practice that is healthful and beneficial whether you are a performer or someone who just wants to do washing up without discomfort.
