The Artists Monastery
So I have over a long time been in a strange conflict with want and desire and the need to achieve. The thing about being alive is that there is a definite framework of being in a body that does stuff. Every generation...all the living things on the planet, does stuff. And in the end it is how we do stuff that defines what kind of being we are. What am I leaving in my wake? Am I a creative force? Or have I used the planets resources to the detriment of all?
So I came to the idea of THE ARTISTS MONASTERY. This is the concept of a contemplative, mindful way of living that feeds the artist spirit. It is not about a building, it is about the monk(ey)'s life....
The question "where's the beach?" and then the pervasive answer "in your mind" can be used in the same way here. The Monastery is a celebration of the artist's life. Actors, comedians, poets, musicians, writers, visual artists, landscape gardeners, architects, mechanics, electricians, plumbers, shelf-stackers at Winco - all who seek mindfulness and conscientious betterment of self in relationship to other living beings are in the Monastery. It is an order of Monk(ey)s who are thinking and being in a creative sense more than just an isolated being, it is a balanced social being seeking to connect to be more than the sum of the parts. This is not a religious order either, it is just a way of moving towards the light - and away from the destructive, towards healing and away from that which is not safe. Yep, The Monastery is in its infancy right now, but I fancy, sometime in the future, I will design monastic retreats for Monk(ey)s to comer together and inspire to recharge their batteries, and ask the right questions - then go and live the creative life.
